Space Optimization Planning

Two partially-occupied facilities consume far more energy to power their infrastructure than a single, optimized facility. Organizations that are in the process of space optimization analysis often perform it manually, which is time-consuming and may lead to sub-optimal results. The ability to automatically identify properties that can be vacated by moving operations and assets to other premises with suitable available space can greatly reduce your energy usage and costs.

CRGT combines a visual business intelligence capability (showing properties and related data on a digital map) with a cost model that uses available data about the facilities and customer-specified business rules to determine an optimal solution that meets your objectives. For example, before soliciting our services, the manual space optimization method employed by one of our large-enterprise clients required approximately three weeks to analyze a small subset of their facilities. The space optimization system that we developed for them now does the same work in seconds, produces better results, and is helping the enterprise achieve its goal of lowering lease expenses, resulting in revenue increases exceeding an estimated $100 million per year.

CRGT’s Custom Solution

The space optimization process needs to take multiple factors into account. Our visual mapping solution enables you to specify parameters that are directly relevant to your needs. One might be the maximum allowable distance between facilities to be combined, which provides the benefit of limiting commuting distances for your personnel. While vacating a facility might result in lease or ownership savings, these saving might be offset or exceeded by the cost of moving.

Before making a decision you need to know what makes the most sense financially. Our space optimization system uses a cost model that considers all factors and determines the optimal combination of facilities to achieve your goal. For example, if the desired objective is to maximize cost savings over the next three years, the system will determine the solution that results in the greatest net cost savings while staying within the established constraints of space, proximity, and suitability.

CRGT offers a flexible, customized space optimization solution that addresses your specific needs, not simply a generic commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) product.

The Need for Good Data

The results of space optimization are only as good as the data. Frequently, required data is either unavailable or it is scattered across many different siloed systems and databases. For this reason, a major part of the process is devoted to data collection, analysis, and integration. Therefore, as the quality of the data increases, the results of the space optimization improve.

Independent of the results you are trying to achieve, the location of every facility, recorded as latitude/longitude coordinates, is essential to effective space optimization. If this data does not exist, CRGT uses a process called geocoding to create it from other sources such as street addresses. In order to maximize your results, other types of data may be required, such as the size of each facility, the amount of space being utilized, the discrete business operations that take place in each facility, and the amount of space needed to conduct each type of operation. For example, if two warehouses are combined into one, the inventory that was in each warehouse still has to be delivered to the same locations as before, but the delivery routes will change. This could result in an increase or decrease in the number of drivers needed and fuel costs.

If the quality of an organization’s data needs improvement, space optimization can be a great driver for a data quality improvement process. Improved data quality leads to better space optimization decisions, resulting in greater savings. Improved data integrity opens doors for better analysis and decision making across the enterprise. For large organizations, the cost savings and efficiency improvements can be significant.

Visual Business Intelligence (VBI) Solutions

CRGT understands that visual display of information is critical when complex situations need to be explained quickly and clearly. Our Visual Business Intelligence (VBI) solutions give users the ability to analyze multi-dimensional data through visualization. By presenting an enterprise-wide view of information that highlights problems graphically and enables users to drill down into information details, our solution transforms data into information, helping energy managers focus on what is most important. For more information, see our Visual Business Intelligence (VBI) Solutions section.

Geocoding

To display data on a map, latitude and longitude coordinates are needed, but often a customer’s location-based data isn’t in this format. Geocoding is the process of finding associated geographic coordinates from other geographic data such as street addresses and zip codes. CRGT can geocode data to prepare it for use in geospatial applications.

Infrastructure Reduction Through Cloud Computing

The cloud computing model dramatically reduces infrastructure size and greatly increases operational efficiencies and profitability. This is made possible by pooling computing resources so that each user facility does not need to have its own dedicated IT infrastructure. As a result, several groups can share hardware and software resources, resulting in more space and less energy consumption. For more information, see our Virtual products and services section.
